The Everyman, Hope Street, Liverpool
I was visiting Liverpool for a concert at the Philharmonic Hall and wanted to book a pre-theatre dinner . I contacted Jeff at the Everyman and he assured me there would be gluten free options available. When we arrived the place was already busy. It has an artistic, bohemian feel to it, unpretentious and studenty almost. I loved it. The food is available at the food bar and you make your choice and they warm it up for you, which doesn't sound great but is only the same as many other restaurants. The gluten free choices were brilliant, I had the Goats cheese tortilla ( Spanish omellete) with a couple of salads and the portion was huge. There was gf pudding available as well but I just couldn't fit it in. I'm intending to go back though and have another go!

Linden House Hotel Torquay

Rayond Blanc's The Restaurant

Any fans of Raymond Blanc's The Restaurant (BBC2)may have seen the penultimate espisode where contestants had to cater for customers with special diets . These included vegans and vegetarians but also Coeliacs.(real ones!) It was alittle disturbing to see the restauranters serving non-gluten-free options to these customers, who luckily questioned everything they were concerned about. (As you do). Also the vegans ended up with cabbage and not much else in one case. However no one appeared to be harmed in the making of the programme!!!
Perhaps though we should find encouragement from the fact that the BBC featured this aspect of Food service in their programme and certainly in summarising, Raymond himself was very adamant about the importance of ensuring all special diet customers are well served!
Hope for us all.

Queens Hotel Llandudno

The Queen's Hotel, Llandudno was recently visited by Bill, who wanted to recommend it to anyone heading for North Wales. Having called the hotel in advance and advised them of his dietary requirements they were completely up to speed. On arriving there; they completely surpassed his expectations by offering him gluten free bread, soup and gravy. Obviously someone in that hotel is tuned in and Bill was able to enjoy the dance weekend he went for without any worries.
If only all experiences were that good. xxxx

A visit to Tuscany, a gluten free heaven

I recently heard from a couple; one of whom is both coeliac and vegetarian aswell. They wanted to let me know about the visit they recently made to Tuscany, a holiday organised by Italian specialists "Gillis Holidays". They told me about the wonderful Villa La Grotta and the excellent service they received from Gilli herself with regards to the many local restaurants that cater for gluten free diets. For them it sounds like a gluten free heaven:
"We tried 3 eating places near the villa. Miva di piu in Arezzo, my husband said it was the best pizza he’d eaten for years!(GF)
Il Borro which I can only describe as memorable, particularly for me. We ate there twice .Lo Strettoio, also visited twice. Had a real job finding it but well worth the effort. First time was on Sunday so REALLY busy, the second time was much quieter but can imagine that its different in high summer. On our second visit they remembered us and that my husband was GF and made quite a fuss about him not eating certain things on the dessert menu! but brought him a selection of wonderful goodies (and dessert wine for us both) My food there was delicious too, so we were both happy!
Interestingly in all 3 places my husband was offered GF beer without prompting."

Halfway Inn Nr. Exeter

Anyone into gluten free cream teas?The Halfway Inn in Aylesbeare nr Exeter is a great stop off point for an extensive GF menu including a traditional cream tea ,so I am told. Having spoken to Eileen, the owner myself I can safely say you will also get a very warm welcome! Charlotte contacted me to let me know that on her way back from Cornwall this summer she stopped at the Halfway Inn for lunch and was over the moon with the extensive gluten free menu, the quality of the food and the very reasonable prices. She's more than happy to recommend it to anyone who is passing that way!

Lindsay Gladstone contacted us to tell us all about her recent holiday to Park Zanzanu in Tignale. The holiday was organised by Gilli's Holidays, a company run by Gilli Lewin and specializing in gluten free breaks in Italy. Lindsay goes on to say that the holiday was a breeze and she was treated like a queen! Delicious gluten-free bread, pasta and puddings were served everyday and meals adapted to suit her requirements. Football World Cup helps travellers to Germany

We recently came across this great document compiled by the German Coeliac Association to help coeliac visitors to the Football World Cup in 2006. It is a comprehensive list of restaurants, stores and accomodation where gluten free is served or understood. It covers most of the major cities where World Cup events took place including Munich, Berlin and even Leipzig. I am sure it is still very releavant today, so anyone planning a trip to Germany in the near future can be well informed courtesey of the World Cup and the German Coeliac Association.

Cathy, a regular visitor to Gluten-free-onthego.com recently contacted us; keen to let everyone know about the excellent service she and her daughter Michelle got at the New Angel Dartmouth. Sensibly, Cathy had booked a table in advance and mentioned that Michelle would need a gluten free diet. On arrival they were greeted by the waiter who knew that a gluten free menu was required and took alot of time and trouble to explain that anything on the menu was possible and that the chef would simply adapt it to Michelles needs. In Cathys words "The food was delicious, we cannot priase them enough". So anyone looking for a gluten free meal near Dartmouth needs look no further than the New Angel. Gluten Free Beer Tasting Angel Inn

I recently was invited to help organise a gluten free beer tasting evening by Coeliac UK and Dr Steve Ford. The event was held at the Angel Inn Holmesfield , which to the best of my knowledge is the first and only pub to serve draft gluten free beer in the UK.( do correct me if I'm wrong on this one). There was 9 different beers available to taste, not only by the specially selected panel but by the 40 odd visitors who also attended. Some beers scored better than others but amongst them where a new home brew beer ( another first) and a soon to be launch GF Beer by St Peters brewery. Look out for the next Coeliac UK Crossed Grain magazine for full results from the event or let me know if you have any other locals severing GF beer near you?

For anyone wishing to take a trip to a traditional British seaside venue then look no further than Blackpool. Kiss Me Quick hats, donkey rides on the beach and candy floss are all still there for the taking....and much more besides. But for those of us with a special diet to consider I would like to recommend a stay at the Novello Hotel where you are sure to be in safe hands. Robert and Fransje made me feel very welcome in their comfortable B&B just off the sea-front. Robert is a trained chef and is happy to cater for most special diets. We were served a very hearty buffet breakfast which set us up nicely for the day ahead.
